Formula 1 Car

My first alternate model of the Lego Technic Land Rover Defender, set number 42110.

View on Youtube:

Dimensions:

- Length: 25 inches, 64 cm

- Width: 8.5 inches, 22 cm

- Height: 6.25 inches, 16 cm

Functions:

- A drive-neutral-reverse (DNR) selector, located on the driver's left side of the car (via 24-tooth gear).

- An 8-speed sequential transmission, located on the driver's right side of the car (via 24-tooth gear).

- Liftable panels reveal interior.

- Raisable fuel tank with a fuel line stored underneath the car (for storage).

- Steering, via hand-of-god knob on top of the car (black 20-tooth gear). The steering wheel is also connected to the system, but is not able to steer the car as there are friction pins in that part of the system, which pins allow for the steering wheel to be manually adjusted to be centered when the wheels are. (It will spin when the wheels move though.)

- Suspension (two hard springs in rear; one hard and one soft spring in front).

Design:

Below, you can see some concept art I created. Some of this dates back to August of 2021 (the model was finished in December 2021).

This is my first model ever at this scale, using those large tires and suspension. It was very tricky due to the lack of my experience. I used roughly 90% of the pieces.

Building at this scale was a blast since I was able to incorporate more function and details into a build.

Gearbox:

I created an 8-speed sequential transmission using only one of the orange gearbox changeover pieces. The gearbox is actually rather simple: Power is transmitted to a 4-speed gearbox; from there, a multiplier is either engaged or disengaged. If disengaged, speeds 1-4 will result. When engaged, speeds 5-8 are present.

The multiplier switches on or off naturally as speeds change between 4 and 5. Simply rotate the 24-tooth gear on the outside of the vehicle to switch between speeds 1-8 and the change will happen.

BEHIND THE BUILD: MOC Tiger 1 German Tank from WWII

WWII German Tiger 1 Tank Built entirely from the LEGO Technic set 42097, the Compact Crawler Crane. Watch the video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IckwR9mZMgc&t=6s This post is not showing the instructions of how to build the tank, rather, this is a design breakdown, showing techniques and new ideas for creating your own builds. With that being said, feel free to look at the pictures and to create something very similar to this. I will try to take ampul amounts of pictures so you can, but know that the purpose of this blog and this post is to enlarge your understanding of LEGO techniques. PRELIMINARY DESIGN I always start with the end in mind- thinking about what I want the creation to do and to look like. The main functions of a tank are, of course, (1) rolling treads, (2) a rotating turret, and (3) a barrel that can rotate up or down. The rolling treads were easy enough. But then I thought about how to move the turret and the cannon. ...

BEHIND THE BUILD: MOC Modern Jet

Modern Jet Built entirely from the LEGO Technic set 42097, the Compact Crawler Crane. My second Technic MOC Build/design time: 7 Hours          Watch the review on  YouTube:          Link on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/REumEdsGObE Dimensions         Length: 52 cm, or 21.5 in          Width: 37 cm, or 14.25 in          Height from ground to body (with landing gear down): 7 cm, or 2.75 in          Height from ground to top of tail fins (with landing gear down): 16.5 cm, or 6.5 in Design         I like to start by deciding on the functions. Things that I knew were a must were: (1) movable flaps, (2) landing gear with rolling wheels, and (3) an air brake. Originally, I wanted the flaps to move together, with one moving up and the other down or both in unison (up together, down together). I made sev...

BEHIND THE BUILD: MOC Star Wars ARC-170 Starfighter

MOC Star Wars ARC-170 Starfighter Built from Set 42097: LEGO Technic Compact Crawler Crane                  https://youtu.be/1GN35kTkg7w                My third LEGO Technic MOC Build time: About 8 hours Dimensions          Length: 14"          Width: 14"          Height: 3" Design         The ARC-170 is a very iconic ship from the Star Wars universe in my opinion. The functionality made it especially challenging and fun to design. The hardest function was, of course, the wings. They had to rotate about the same axle, but in different directions. To connect all the wings together so that they rotated at the same time and reached the same height was tricky, but I came up with something that helped.          I slid the small gear turntables (the ones the wings would eventually attac...
